The entire family was moving to another city, 2000 kilometres away. It wasn’t easy at first, but then transplanting your entire family to another city never is. To leave behind friends and familiar places for a destination you have never heard of before can be scary, especially for a 6-year-old.
Her father was posted in Assam and the family packed all their worldly possessions in a single grey trunk. It took them a little over 7 days before they reached Guwahati, and what seemed like a lifetime to make it their home.
As strange as it may seem, the one thing that remained with her about that epic journey to Assam was the grey metal trunk. Such a simple object, but one that many Indian families will recognise as a symbol of change and new beginnings.
On her parents’ 40th anniversary she decided on a gift that was so unique we had to share it with you.
"As usual, they were regaling us with their favourite story from our life - how we started our journey together with nothing but a trunk. I wondered about that. Their whole world in one single trunk? Today, they were celebrating 40 years of being together and I thought what if I could actually do that? Symbolise their whole world in a single trunk!"
Clearly, her parents were delighted with the gift. We can only imagine what it must have felt like to open it.
"They were not expecting that. - a trunk filled with memories. From my mother’s maiden photographs to some of the books that they fell in love with, her wedding jewellery, a couple of artifacts that they had collected along the way. It was all those little things that had made the whole journey and our life there so beautiful."
